Agents Unknown Spying with the Enemy in Vietnam - John Murphy was a spy, training spies in Vietnam. His life during that time is full of incredible stories that Michael Reiter captured in a documentary. The film captures the challenges that guys like John experienced when working on the ground where reality morphs into something that doesn't jive at higher levels.
You've got to watch Agents Unknown if you are into combat, Vietnam, or history. John, Michael and Pete get into the parallels between Vietnam and Pete's experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. #spyvsspy #episode #podcast #documentary #vietnam #film Similar episodes: Jack Barsky Mikey Bee Bill Mankins |

I've seen the film and this interview has given me a greater appreciation of its complexity. To have an in-depth, single narrator's pointed experiences really enlivens the material. A nice balance is struck between anecdote and the kafkaesque organizational levels of planning interspersed with with an overview of selected combat action. I would have included a bit more gallows humor, a kind of tragic/comic relief in the film itself with a note that more such outtakes will be on the DVD version.

Great notes Mark. Myself and my friend and pro-Bill Mankins are going to do another episode with John specifically talking about our combined experiences doing what we do. If you like the last episode...just wait.

I was in Afghanistan and Iraq as an advisor and my experience was identical. This show was fascinating and informative but also brought back frustrating memories.

I remember reading the ugly American and the quiet American and thinking these should be read by everyone going to a foreign country, add agents unknown to the list.
