Hey, this is john Leon Guerrero. Our guest today is one Escovedo. He's a percussionist, as are many of the eska vetoes. And he's recorded or toured with acts like Prince Barry White, Herbie Hancock, Lionel Richie Hall and Oates, Patti LaBelle, Bobby McFerrin, Gloria Estefan, Alger row. And of course, his pops, Pete Escovedo, and his sister Sheila E. are frequent listeners will recognize that he's been on the show before, and that he means a great deal to our musical community. And to me personally, I shared a stage with him many years ago. And back then he was a generous collaborator who made an enormous impact on me because he had been on some of the biggest tours in history. And I was very, very green.

And to me personally, I shared a stage with him many years ago. And back then he was a generous collaborator who made an enormous impact on me because he had been on some of the biggest tours in history. And I was very, very green. What that experience taught him was how to be of service to the song, the show, and to the musicians around him and his vibe as it always does elevated the whole band. As you'll hear in this episode, one is also at least partly responsible for me actively playing music Again, and I will always be grateful for his encouragement, maybe peer pressure to do that. Now today happens to be one's birthday. And we'll be celebrating again as tradition dictates with a fantastic band at Yo, she's on April 1 and second. Last year's party was a huge success sold out and Packed to the Rafters. And this year he's trying to outdo himself. This one Escovedo and you're listening to the break it down show.
Jon Leon Guerrero 3:34
Man I am in Vacaville California at the home of Fast Eddie was Juan's cousin. And I'm here with the great Juan Escovedo. It's been about a year since we did this last I think it was a year ago because your birthday is coming up again. And here we are back at yo she's for 61st birthday celebration man your 60th must have been so good to this year. You do in two nights.
Juan Escovedo 3:58
Yeah. The Sixth turnout. So good. It was sold out. And there were people around the corner still trying to get in. Because I think they thought it was two shows. But it was one
Jon Leon Guerrero 4:10
right o'clock. So okay, let me just take a break for one second because I was at that show, and that show with lit up. That show was spectacular. Yeah, it was fun. The thing about that show was that we went in there with expectations because you had lineup and every single person delivered man, well, everybody to live, right.
Juan Escovedo 4:30
So that's cool one. You know, I grew up with a lot of these musicians and the ones that, that I didn't know that well, but also I knew the capability how amazing they were in seeing them on state. So of course, you know, my 60th That's it. I have to get, you know, look great. musicians in the Bay Area. There's so many great musicians out here. So when they came, and they did up it, they played Yeah, cuz I was on it. You know, they came in force. I had it Do nothing. So, yeah, it was so much fun. So then when I call Yoshi is to do it again. They go, man, yes. We will love to have you again. You did you sold out? Yeah. So they said, well, let's add another show. I said, Well, that's 350 more people,
Jon Leon Guerrero 5:18
right? Tell me friends you think I got?
Juan Escovedo 5:21
So that's 700 people. I say that's a lot. I said, I feel good. I could sell out. So I'm taking one show. I'll sell out again. Hopefully it'll be nice. But then they said, Let's add another show. I said, Okay, cuz last time it was on a Monday. Yeah. I said, you have to give me towards weekend, the weekend, at least Wednesday. If I get a Wednesday and Thursday, do it. And they said, Yeah, we'll make that happen. So that's why it's not in March. My birthday is March 13. But they couldn't find two days and until April, the beginning of April, they were towards the end of the week. Yeah. Which is fine. You know, I celebrate past month. Good. Here's the thing about
Jon Leon Guerrero 6:01
Yeah, it's not here's the thing about a Wednesday night show is it's in the middle of the week, so you can balance it. Exactly. And so everybody come out to that Wednesday show because you have a great time. And here's the here's the thing about Thursday, though, what the next day is Friday. I know what you weren't going to do not network that day. And so if you walk into work and you know, a little bit cooked, he's like, Man, you didn't look like you get a lot of sleep last night. I didn't know what that one is gonna be when we went all night. And if you have to do that, and then bear through a Friday at work, you could do that everybody.
Juan Escovedo 6:35
You could do that. Also, it's an eight o'clock show would none at 930 Yeah, you can get home at 10 1030. Right?
Jon Leon Guerrero 6:41
So you'll be fine. It'll be fine. Everybody, come on out. Enjoy. Enjoy. Man. I'll tell you the thing about Yoshi is is that after all these years, they still they got that bangin menu. The food is excellent. The drinks are terrific. So every part of the every part of the experience is top notch. Right? And then you wind it up with the entertainment which is going to be spectacular.
Juan Escovedo 7:06
Who do you have on the bill this year? I have Richard Bain. Okay. From sapele malo, he's his daughter suavecito is hit. All right, that's always on array radio. I have radio Beato.
Jon Leon Guerrero 7:21
Let's slow down for a minute because Richard being everybody. I don't know if I've ever you know, I was a DJ for nine years. I can, I can damn sure say that. I never spun a wedding and didn't play suavecito Exactly. suavecito has not ever left the musical lexicon. Right. So, you know, bring your lady out, fellas. Yeah. Ladies, get dressed up. Bring your man drag him out and make him make it shine up to because you will experience some love that night. Uh huh. Okay, Richard mean
Juan Escovedo 7:54
you got okay so Ray I'll be I don't have Bob cry. Oh, slow down.
Jon Leon Guerrero 7:59
Wants Oh, Let us savor this lineup. Ray Oviedo, perhaps the certainly. I mean, in terms of, of Latin music, the greatest Bay Area guitarist alive right now. And I know people will stand up and say, well wait a minute, you took Carlos Santana lives in the Bay Area. Okay, you're That's true. That's true. But only people who who have not seen Ray play are saying that right? Have you seen Ray play? You'd be like, Oh yeah, yeah, he's amazing. He's amazing.
Juan Escovedo 8:30
So any play with Herbie Hancock for years years and Bill summers, summers,
Jon Leon Guerrero 8:36
summers heat, okay. But
Juan Escovedo 8:37
also he wrote a lot of songs for my father's. I think every album my father did, we had to re record
Jon Leon Guerrero 8:43
at least one song Yeah, if not many.
Juan Escovedo 8:45
Yes. Yeah. is amazing writer, great performer.
Jon Leon Guerrero 8:49
Just a spectacular connector with the audience, too. Yeah. I mean, we're not just talking about splendid musical performances we're talking about come out, you will have a good time. That's true. So that's the thing I love about ray is that he's he's such a technician. He's such an amazing guitar player, but he connects with the audience in a sincere way that just draws you in. And it's weird because throughout the years, that connection has been different in different times of his life. You know, he went from he's because he's gone from being just amazing, you know, chops, everything, right. And now he's like, the elder statesman of guitar. So it's almost like you want to follow him around like the Pied Piper. Right? So yeah, come out and check out Who else you got.
Juan Escovedo 9:34
But also Ray has his own CDs. Yeah. If you ever want to listen to his music, you can just, you know, get a little gray, and hear some of his songs and writings and Yep, and he has his own group, of course, and he's always playing, you know, wherever he can and dislike all of us, but you
Jon Leon Guerrero 9:52
can catch him at a lot of places in the Bay Area. He plays it Yo, she's frequently Yeah, with with with pops with All kinds of people, right? A lot of times Leo be with them. So come out. I'm telling you, and then Billy Johnson
Juan Escovedo 10:09
Oh, Billy Johnson.
Jon Leon Guerrero 10:11
Right? Yes, the funky funky Billy. Do you not like to get Billy Johnson on the show too? You should? Um Yeah. Billy Johnson who was years in maze. Yeah. All those great maze to Oh, that live version of the live version of everything. Right But maze First of all, but everything before I let go. Uh huh. Yeah. So if you guys are familiar with that was recorded in England at Hammersmith Odeon. That's an iconic live recording. And that was Billy Johnson. You guys did that great big hammer tour together to we toured on a hammer tour. And we became I don't know and before that, but
Unknown Speaker 10:51
yeah, we never played, you know, nine months out the year like we were talking. We're on tour for a long time. So we hung out a lot and we became You know, best friends and stuff. So anything that I can do, and I can use the best drummer I'm gonna call Billy. Yeah. And also he was on a super natural CD with Santana. Oh, he sure was he was on so he had that what six Platinum? Yeah, yeah. So he's on that that CD too. So
Jon Leon Guerrero 11:18
that's one of those things to where you it's not an achievement that he was on that CD. It was his he was getting his do exactly being on that CD and and it wasn't like, oh, he got to play on that CD. His playing was one of the factors that made that CD. Oh, of course. So you guys are in for a treat. Come on out. The The other thing about Billy Johnson is that he is like he's immortal. He looks the same. He does he's ever looked ever right.
Juan Escovedo 11:48
Well, he lives by the lake like Mayor he lives on the lake. Yeah, he rides stays fit
Jon Leon Guerrero 11:54
stays fit because he might be 42 or 137. You don't know
Juan Escovedo 12:00
You don't know. Well, I know he's not either one of those.
Jon Leon Guerrero 12:04
somewhere in the middle somewhere
Juan Escovedo 12:05
in the middle, so
Jon Leon Guerrero 12:06
Okay, Billy Johnson on drums Who else?
Juan Escovedo 12:10
And I just hired the lead singer now with Tony Toni Tone, Dyson, amazing singer. I think he's been the
Jon Leon Guerrero 12:21
lead singer with Tony Tony. Yes.
Juan Escovedo 12:22
And he's been out and tour with them for the last I want to say a year, yeah, six to eight months or a year. But he is I saw them at Yoshi is like four or five months ago. You know, of course, all this shows sold out. So we're hanging out and you know, I did some shows with him before he got this gig. So then could drone couldn't make it. He was supposed to do the show, but I see
Jon Leon Guerrero 12:50
I wasn't even gonna say anything about that. But I see we're gonna have a great Jerome been with you and he was going to he was going to do what he was going You're gonna make him sing.
Juan Escovedo 13:01
No. He was gonna he was gonna bring me a mirror and make sure I look good. I will put him to work. Yeah, but just his presence because bro, like, you know where I was on the Purple Reign tour we opened up, of course my sister Seeley. So we opened up and Jerome was every time he came out. People went crazy it you know, and he was in the movie like, under the cherry moon and well and he had a magical presence in Purple Rain, Purple Rain, of course with the time and doing all the steps but just him. Really he was the star if you
Jon Leon Guerrero 13:39
asked me You know, I've under the cherry moon. I believe so too.
Juan Escovedo 13:43
Yeah, I think so. But he's a great guy, you know, and one of my friends I kept in touch with and so he was gonna come out we're gonna do the time Yeah, when the songs and have drone do his thing. Man.
Jon Leon Guerrero 13:55
You know how much I love Jerome. I'm getting on one of the people who love My mind whenever Jerome came out to, in fact, my wife, I remember at one point, we were watching the time and she saw me lose my mind. And she like, she stopped and looked at me like, What is going on? And I was genuinely losing my mind. Because Jerome made everybody crazy. Yeah. And then he was pulling people up to dance. And you know, he must have pulled like 1520 women out of the stage, and then out onto the stage and like, I waved at him, and I pointed at my wife and he pulled her up there. And she was like, What are you and she was looking at me the whole time while she was getting pulled on stage because she knew it. I was pointing at her. She was like, I didn't. Anyway, yeah, he he brings that
Juan Escovedo 14:41
vibe, that energy and just fun. Yeah, you know, to the show. That's what
Jon Leon Guerrero 14:45
he does. He ramps up the fun
Juan Escovedo 14:46
he does.
Jon Leon Guerrero 14:47
He'll take an eight and make it an 11.
Juan Escovedo 14:49
You're not lyin But anyway, he'll be at the 62nd one, it'll be at 62. Okay,
Jon Leon Guerrero 14:55
so in the meantime, you got Dyson singing
Juan Escovedo 14:58
Dyson Yep. And He's a amazing singer. Yeah. And he's he blends with that band. You know, it's that's a hard spot to take refuse to do Sure. spot and he delivers. He's in he's from the Bay Area. And so we ended up talking and stuff and not knowing that I was going to hire him because like I said, I had Jerome Yeah, but I went to the Tony Tony Tony show. Yep. And we talked and stuff so I said, you know, be a good fit to have him come and do some songs from the from the Tonys. And that'll be a good fit for. I like to mix it up. So I have you know, Richard been suavecito the Latin stuff and then like I said a Dyson from the Tonys. And then also has, I have a sous deist, the master percussionist that has his own line to percussion line. And I saw him at the Nam and in LA, and he
Jon Leon Guerrero 15:54
actually play we ran into each other for about one 10th of a second. I was like, Man Run in one way or the other and we were like,
Juan Escovedo 16:02
yo, no, it's so quick to you trying to see everybody that's
Jon Leon Guerrero 16:06
120,000 people down there. Yes. Yes. So three days. Is it three? Yeah. Thursday, Friday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday on Sunday, four days, although I don't know about you, but I never stick around for Sunday. Yeah, that's the closing feel like Sunday's the day everybody sad. I just get out of there before that happens. on your birthday celebrations, you're gonna have the space at tons of percussion. And if you are any kind of fan of percussion, especially Bay Area, percussion and I say that specifically because Bay Area percussion is a mix of a lot of things. It is. It's funny to say that here I am. I'm dissecting Bay Area, percussion in the presence of one Escovedo who has been a foundational part of the evolution of percussion for a generation and really, you know, your pops, generally Before that, right kind of lay the groundwork for all of you. Exactly. And man, it's been a, it's been a lot of fun to watch all the contributions that you've all made as a family. We were talking earlier about a movie we both saw that talked about some family dynamics and band situations. Maybe we won't bring it up tonight. And I, it makes me wonder, because all families go through stuff. But when you're a family, in the entertainment business your stuff has. It's almost like you're everything that you do is visible, right? You know, because if there's any friction, people start to notice even if you're quiet about it, they go, huh, how come? What's going on? They can sense the dynamic
Juan Escovedo 17:50
and it leaks through through the band members, people, the crew sound people yeah, you know, that's why, uh, believe it or not, I mean, will believe it? Yes. A lot of people love working with my father because he's so easygoing. He's like, that's good. That's great. You know, every he wrecked he, he notices every little detail of what you're doing and the effort you put in to make the show possible. It's not just my father. It's not just us, the band members, the crew, the people setting up the chair, the food, like you said, said Yoshi, all that has to come together and make a really good show. Like, if the food is terrible, they're going to come in there with, you know, not a great attitude or, you know, so it's a combination of all the employees that work when you do a concert. It really does. Yeah, you're creating an experience. Exactly. Yeah. Do you want them to go home saying, Man, the food's great. The music, we got to meet Pete or we, you know, we're signing autographs all that's connected to the show. Yeah. So you always kind of have to be on you know, at all times. times because you're still you know these are fans that you don't know if they flew in yep you know to see the concert. You
Jon Leon Guerrero 19:08
know what kind of a big deal people make exactly that so
Juan Escovedo 19:11
we look at it as you know we want to make it a good night not just for us we love We love to play and we wanted to be our best to yeah so it shows and then by the audience enjoying ourselves our level goes up because we're like, Man all these applaud and we appreciate the people and people coming down and when it's sold out we were really excited. Yeah, man we nobody else can come in here like all these people are here to see us. So we we just have How can you not be in a good mood? You know, this is a work but we love it and and when we're with the family, it makes it that much more special. Okay, these words are coming out of your mouth and they're really appropriate and perfect words for the occasion when you know you're it's one thing if you're doing press, you want to say nice thing. You want to talk about how your fans do a great job coming out supporting you, and you appreciate it. But we, everybody in the Bay Area has been watching all of you guys do this for decades, right? So it's like, I can't say, I've ever had any conversations with anybody. Let's say if I, you know, the subject that pops comes up, it might come up from something from Oh, I remember one time we went in this club called Mr. Ease, or, Oh, I remember one time, and I remember one time can be 60 years ago, right?
Jon Leon Guerrero 20:35
Right. And I've never heard anybody do anything but Gosh, happiness, right? You know about all those experiences. So it's one thing to hear you say these things, but anybody who has ever been to a show, you know, I saw you one time play with the funky Latin orchestra. Do you remember this but this was it. Shopping a shopping mall. They opened In a shopping mall and conquered, right. And you guys played outside, there's like a little area. You remember that show? Yeah. And I just remember, you know, we had a great time you guys sounded amazing. That band is fantastic. Yeah. Hello.
Juan Escovedo 21:13
Yeah. Now that's what Maile Flores. Yeah, he's actually on doing Yoshi. So with me, of course,
Jon Leon Guerrero 21:20
yes, of course. You lead right into it. Yeah, that was a setup. So I remember. Yeah, it was, uh, that night. You guys had a spectacular show. But I just remember thinking like, this is a show that everybody came out to for free. Right? It was just you were playing outside at the shopping mall in the shopping mall was throwing Hey, everybody, there's music here. Right and you guys work? killin? That's a great band. Dude. You guys were killing rich was callin everybody was it was fantastic. And I remember I was looking at you while you were playing a solo. And you were man, everything you had you had a crowd suck the You had, I don't even know if you think about this stuff anymore. Probably not. But you had drawn the crowd in like built up to solo. And it was like, you know, everybody was grooving and then you and you start burning. And you were you know, building us up and Ryan making us bringing us to a climax we were all having a good time. But I remember I was looking at you, man and you were dressed. You were everything about that experience was just 100% right. And so that's I just want to set up the level of expectation because that's what you're gonna get when you come out to Yoshi is on a Wednesday. You think man, what am I doing out here on a Wednesday? You know, pulling into a parking garage when I should be at home watching TV my socks on? No, you shouldn't. She put on some real shoes as she put it though combing your hair man and brings a lady out to have a good time,
Juan Escovedo 22:49
April 1 and April 2
Jon Leon Guerrero 22:51
and April 2. And you know what? Come to both shows. Yeah, bring your lady no girlfriend.
Juan Escovedo 23:00
That's not me. But the thing is to one, my father just played a Yoshi. And all the shows was so you guys
Jon Leon Guerrero 23:08
did like four shows in a row.
Juan Escovedo 23:09
Yes. all sold out. So every time my father introduced me, I will mention that I'm playing a Yoshi is April 1 and second. So even after the show, people were getting in line to buy, they're buying tickets for my show, which was so cool to show a pop So, and there's a month away, there's like, yeah, and they're buying tickets. And I'm like, this is so cool. So when we assign an autograph, people already have the tickets. Can you assign my ticket on my course? You know? Yeah. So it's there just to sell the part
Jon Leon Guerrero 23:41
that you scan because you don't want to be like, Oh, I don't know.
Juan Escovedo 23:44
That scribbled on so they bought tickets already. I mean, it's doing pretty good.
Jon Leon Guerrero 23:49
Well, if you if you know what's good for you, you'll come out. Now here's the thing, everybody, you got to bring a little bit of money because guess what Yoshi is has a beautiful bar. Yeah, they got nice drinks. It's a sushi place and sushi is not cheap anymore, right? And it's delicious, wonderful sushi. That was swimming that morning. So you know, that ain't gonna be cheap. But you know, you guys, you work hard. Come out treat yourself nice.
Juan Escovedo 24:15
has I think it's only $22 or it's not too expensive. So
Jon Leon Guerrero 24:19
that's, uh, you know what, man, if you think about it like this, that's barely more than a movie. That's true nowadays. And the movies not gonna smile at you, and appreciate that you came to see it. So but everybody in this band, well, who else who else is in the band that you haven't mentioned yet?
Juan Escovedo 24:36
Let's see. So male male floor Yeah, is doing percussions. Well,
Jon Leon Guerrero 24:40
I did see Meo at Nam. I see him in Nam every year. And like you said, He He's everywhere.
Juan Escovedo 24:46
Yeah, he's the leader of the bear flow that you mentioned. Yeah. But also he plays with Richard means band. So sapele Okay, so he's part of that. So when we do this sapele songs, he'll be on stage with me playing to Bali. And now beyond congas, but like I said, also, you know, hey, Soos dis was amazing master the headhunters and you know, he's done a made Stevie Wonder. Yeah. But if you look him up, you see, he's one of those top notch percussion players, not just in the bay area around the world. Yeah. And he's fortunate enough to know him. And he played with us. My father ban, when we're doing a tour with Tito pointing years ago, as my father's man, myself, I don't know, my brother, Peter. Michael was on this, but Sheila was on it to point they pay Sue's disk. So we're doing like Coliseum Big, Big Show. So this is when he just came out here in the Bay Area. So we've been friends since So this first time and
Jon Leon Guerrero 25:51
that was in probably the late 70s. I think so. Yeah.
Juan Escovedo 25:55
It's been a long time. Yeah. So you know, I'm excited to have him on bore two. So that's going to be nice. It's not lost on me that if this happened in the late 70s, you were in your 20s.
Jon Leon Guerrero 26:10
Yes. And at that point in time, you're playing those huge stages with world class players. And you've been playing at the world class level for 40 years.
Juan Escovedo 26:23
Actually more Yeah. So that 50 at least 52 years of high end well, okay, yeah.
Jon Leon Guerrero 26:33
So, when you started off doing that, though, you started off you started off playing
Juan Escovedo 26:38
bongos right? Actually, I was, uh, okay, I played okay. In the front room. My father had the band Azteca. Yeah, there's 16 musicians. And back then they didn't, they didn't have or put the money or have the money together to maybe have a studio to practice every day, you know, cuz it took us Long time to get that band together. Yeah, a lot like a coke. Yeah, yeah. So they my father had the biggest front room in the band so all them guys would ram into him in
Jon Leon Guerrero 27:12
his front room in the house. Yeah for the whole list but but let's let's face it a 16 piece band no matter what size room room you got in your house, it's good cramming 16 people just to stand there and drink tea is a lot like man, but then you got people stretched out and swinging. Right?
Juan Escovedo 27:32
Well the front room were was two front rooms. So okay, you come in the door on the right in the front room and now on the left. So they combined just oh yeah, stretched it out, test it out. So when they take a break and stuff, me and my brother and Sheila would just play whatever. Yeah, now just having Fred what was close what was closed because you're crammed in there anyway. So whatever the next two years you're gonna pick it up and play. But eventually I actually was playing trumpet for, I think six years for a long time. People don't know this. And my Uncle Phil, and he was playing he, okay, my mother's father owned a hotel. I mean a apartment building right next to us on a night that he's 25 years. So a lot of band members would stay in there, okay, including my Uncle Phil. So my Uncle Phil would come next door Teach me trumpet and learn how to read music and stuff. And I don't I don't remember him ever playing trumpet but because he was a bass player. But was funny. He was teaching me drop it. So
Jon Leon Guerrero 28:39
by the trumpets, not even written on the bass clef. This is just me making it up. They're making it and
Juan Escovedo 28:47
and I said, Man, do you know now I'm thinking about I don't think he ever pulled out a trumpet. He but he taught me trumpet. Ah, so whatever work you know, so I think because he he knew Bayes and he knew how to read music and think he was helping me.
Jon Leon Guerrero 29:02
Yeah, let's dissect this because this is really worth exploring because you have a unique family. And that's what I was gonna ask you about first, but I'm gonna get right back to this. But we were talking about a situation that we had both sort of seen on a recent documentary, where there was some Discord. And it doesn't seem like you guys ever suffered any major like you guys have always been, you know, plan together. In some combination. You've always been supportive of each other, right? You never hear anybody, man. I swear there's nobody I'm not saying this because we're recording a podcast, but you never hear anybody, say, some unkind thing followed by the name Escovedo. You just don't. Right? And you know, man, we know 100 of the same musicians, right. So everybody's been and it plays into what I'm about to say, which was your Uncle Phil was teaching you Hey, this is Pete a Turner from lions rock productions. We create podcasts around Hear and if you your brand or your company want to figure out how to do a podcast, just talk to me. I'll give you the advice on the right gear, the best plan and show you how to take a podcast that makes sense for you that's sustainable. That's scalable and fun. Hit me up at Pete at breakdown show. com Let me help I want to hear about it. And it plays into what I'm about to say, which was your Uncle Phil was teaching you what has been inculcated in your family as how you communicate, right? It doesn't matter what instrument It doesn't matter how it's written. It doesn't matter what part you play in the band. It just matters that you are communicating you're emoting you're bringing people in and entertaining them. Right. So he was teaching you like a familial, cultural, right lesson. And you were taking it as I'm learning how to play the trumpet
Juan Escovedo 30:48
because that's what you were doing. And now now I'm thinking about it. Good. That's what connects the family is the music because we love music so much, and we help each other that you Right. So how do you get upset or mad with somebody who's trying to improve your life as a musician? Yeah, just like my father was teaching us. First we'd like I said, we started on our own to plan and then he saw how serious we were about playing. Then he corrected us, you know, like my kids, but, you know, I don't correct them unless I see them really, because I want them to first have fun. Yeah, with the music. My son is playing piano drums, like at my house. I have bass piano. I have like six panels, bass, trumpet, knapsacks, flute, all that. In the house. It's just around. It's all it's in the front room. Yeah, you come in the house. There's two drum sets right there. There's congas and he's playing harmonica. He You know, I'm bought by him, you know, bunch of instruments and stuff toys. His toy. Yeah. But he's getting good at it now. So that's how it was with us. We just had fun until you start to get kind of serious or you asked me you know, Daddy, can you show me how to Yeah. So you And then it keeps him out the streets it keeps them tight knit with the family, right? Instead I'd rather them be in the house practicing jammin like we did yeah, then being out in the streets and doing wrong things and, and and it keeps the family tight and you're not just talking about music, you're talking about everything in life, but you're sitting next to someone with a family member and starting with music, and combines music combines with any a lot of things being on time rehearsing, dedication, so all that comes to setting you up for life and work and whatever you choose to do later on the discipline of being a good contributor. Right. And being a good father, brother. My father's you know, kept us tight knit with practicing. Yeah. And that's why when you see us and we perform, we appreciate, you know, the we know how much work it takes to be at that level. Yeah. So we respect each Other, you know, ability and what we bring to the stage. So, when we're performing well, we're pretty happy because, you know, we wouldn't have to be here. We didn't. All these people didn't have to show up or be here. So, this this is what we like to do. Yeah, we'd love it.
Jon Leon Guerrero 33:16
You know how fortunate it is everybody's act together. Also at your 60th birthday party. All of your children came? Yes, man. I know there was in your daughter came from
Juan Escovedo 33:28
Las Vegas, one New Vegas and one was this one in Vegas? There's one in New York. So when I saw them
Jon Leon Guerrero 33:35
you weren't expecting them? No. Yeah, that was nice.
Juan Escovedo 33:38
So I was a little bit I said Oh, hold it cool. So good. Haha,
Jon Leon Guerrero 33:42
no, she hated it. Man. whatever amount of cool. You lost. It was everybody was with you because it was. It was nice. That was a cool surprise.
Juan Escovedo 33:50
It was.
Jon Leon Guerrero 33:51
Yeah. And then with regard to your like pops helping you when you have issue on on on your instrument. It's not like, you know, you always hear those stories about piano teachers wrapping somebody's fingers with a ruler or something when they play a bad note, right? It was like, you guys would see each other whether it was Pop's helping you or somebody else Peter, Miko and you or Sheila, when you was like, there's something some little thing that you're struggling with at that moment, and somebody else just comes and lifts you up, right? And it's no different than another, you know, activity and your team teammate sees you doing something and it's like, oh, this is stopping one from having fun right now. Right? And and now
Juan Escovedo 34:38
they see the struggle. They see you trying to get this. But the thing is, my father always had all these albums, you know, back then just full of music, and he would play music all the time. So you were also listening to every type of music you can imagine, you know, jazz blues miles Was all one thing in common was that it was good. Good and it's music. Yeah. And and when you listen, like I don't know how people are, the younger generation is, but it fires us it because now you have you know the electronic stuff TV. Yeah, I mean of course we are TV too but but it was nothing but music we didn't we didn't sit down and watch TV all day we would listen to music and practicing. So it's non stop music and all our friends were musicians and our family our musicians so all you do is listen you didn't know you're studying by listening to all this stuff. You're just having fun you putting all this in your head? Yeah, all these different rhythms all these different sounds and stuff and eventually you know, those are Tim Bali those are conquer those a Bongo and then that's, you know, I got addicted to playing bongos. I mean I just love the sound. Good. That was real salsa music, dancing. Something about because she loves mostly playing congas back then, and my father was playing to Bali. So I say, well, there's a gap right here for bongos and I'm trying to think who's playing? Who's playing I think we'll summers playing bongos. Okay while and who else those other Bongo play in my uncle coke. So coke actually helped me with bongos. He was showing me the proper way to play the bongos in the bell. And then my father Sheila helped me with the call doesn't my father with the tamales. And then the drums were there, and I love drums. I still have, you know, like I said, drum set in my house. I love playing trap drums. So when I practice I like to play more. How
Jon Leon Guerrero 36:41
come you don't play trap
Juan Escovedo 36:42
drums out very often. I know. And I love it. The thing is because my brother is always on the drums or my sister. So that's why they play the drums pretty good too. Yeah, amazing drummer. Yeah, but you know when we're smaller, yeah, I was the drummer and myself. They're saying and my brother saying, okay, so I was back there playing drums for years. Yeah. And then we got older in this switch. So
Jon Leon Guerrero 37:08
I'm glad I didn't know that because I played with it one time and you I would, I would have lost my mind if I would have thought. But here's just, I mean, I'm sure deep down inside, I knew if you wanted to just come back down with me you could have but I just remember though, you know, like the man, you've said, some, these are things that I'm sure never affected you and never, he probably never even realized what happened. But, you know, I've told this story before. If ever, everybody goes back and listen to your first episode on our show, I told the story of when we were playing together. At one point you had just, you know, like we were playing some phrase that involved us breaking out and then coming back after the singer and leading him back into the song. And I remember you just looked around and looked over at me one time I said, Hey, man, that breeze. For some reason, man. I was like ah, and I saw clarity in the song I hadn't seen before that right. And now fast forward, because I really stopped playing music for a long time. You know, I got into DJing I was DJing for a while and then I didn't, I didn't play traps for a long time, and then raise my kids and stuff. And then at one point, I was sort of forced back into service, because I ran into you at Dwayne's house. And I was Yeah, Tony. Tony, we were there. You were playing with Levi, Levi Caesar. And I don't know what you guys were rehearsing for. But it was it was one of those warriors gigs when the warriors were the guys playing
Juan Escovedo 38:38
the Warriors called called to do some shows there. So I called Levi, we hooked up and I called Dwayne Wiggins, because I know he had a studio. And we went over there and we were rehearsing, putting the band together. And the drummer didn't show up yet. He was late. Yeah. And then I saw you doing an interview with Dwayne and I think I heard you mentioned something about you as a drummer, or we talked after whatever. Yeah. And I'm like, well, the drummer is not here. So we need to get going. Yeah. I said, Why don't you jump on the drums and help us out? And I'd like you to read, I looked at
Jon Leon Guerrero 39:14
my co host of the show. And I was like, I've made a big deal out of this because we did an interview with Dwayne. And he was like, Hey, you know, after we hit the stop button, we were done. And he said, Hey, what are you guys doing a little later? And we were like, I don't know, whatever you're doing, what are you doing? And he said, I was gonna be a rehearsal over here. And and leave I will be here. You guys know Levi, and I was like, No, I've never met Levi. I want to meet Levi, man. Yeah, what time and he was like, Okay, this is what time and it was just enough time for us to go get like some chicken wings or whatever, and come back. So we came back. But while we were out getting chicken wings, I was telling Pete about Levi because he was not really aware of the details of Levi's story. tenure with prints. Right? So I was giving them the highlights and I was like, you know, it's a big deal. See this dude, man, he's a he's an amazing guitar player. You're gonna hear some things that you know are probably gonna make you cry.
Juan Escovedo 40:12
Right? So RC play with Sheila. He was on tour with us.
Jon Leon Guerrero 40:15
Yes, yeah. Well, we'll get to that in a minute. So we get back. And I'm just trying not to be in the way cuz yours coming in. And you guys are setting up and stuff. So I'm sitting out in the way, then I saw you and that's when we talk and that was it. Oh, man. Remember me? I was, you know, I, you given me this profound musical moment, and you probably don't even remember it. You were like, no, yeah, remember it? I don't you know, maybe you did? Who knows? Uh huh. But yes, that was the fateful day you were like, Hey, get back there, man. We need some help drummers like we'll be here for like 10 minutes. So but you did good is your hold. I tried not to make any mistakes because I hadn't played in a very long time. But now I'm playing in a band called The invasion. A British Invasion band we play like stones Beatles, you know figs, David Bowie. And because our guitar players English Oh, we play a lot of those tunes man and you know what's missing in your band? What chord Alright, so don't Don't worry. Don't worry. Yeah, man, really in the last couple years since since we met a Dwayne's that that? Yeah, man, a lot of things in my life have changed and turned around and gotten better and good re ignited my enjoyment and love of music. And man, it's and you played a huge part in that. Wow. So yeah, man, when you know you're celebrating your birthday party at Yo, she's today. I'm coming. Good. We're doing it. Well, you know, I know what that good time is gonna be when I
Juan Escovedo 41:50
get there. And then watch Billy Johnson. Of course. He's amazing. Yeah, man. Amazing. And he's funny. You know, another thing thing that people don't realize when when you hire a band member, you they're bringing their vibe too right to the, to the stage and backstage. To me, it starts backstage and it comes on stage. So Billy is so funny, and he's just great to be around. He's always on time. So those people you want around. Yeah. And that's why when you were not backstage arguing, worried about little petty stuff and then go on stage, then we'll fake Yeah. So that's why you always say man Escovedo. They're fun they were backstage laughing having a good time and it and and it starts from Sunday we go there we go. We get there four hours early. or five before anybody comes there. You know, you have to set up a sound sound to run through the songs. And then we're just laughing on stage. There's no a man had turned down, don't like I see some bands rehearse or soundcheck and they aren't doing that. And I'm like, that vibe comes on stage and it shows but where's the Too busy laughing and having a good time. Yeah. And then when we get on stay weak that the elevator just continues continues. Yeah. And that's why you get that vibe when we perform is because we're, we're having a good time. You know, it's just fun.
Jon Leon Guerrero 43:15
Sometimes I take a sidebar from doing a conversation with our guests to talk to the audience and they'll say things like, Okay, listen audience, you can have a great time when you come out to your cheese. You, you know, bring your best because you want your lady to see you at your best. So, go home after work. Clean up. You know what I mean? Take a shower, take a shower, use all the cells so users get as you want.
Juan Escovedo 43:42
Yes, zero deodorant.
Jon Leon Guerrero 43:46
Watch a greasy behind. Oh, come out and really have a good time with it. That's what I say to the audience. But now I'm going to take a sidebar to the musicians out there because if you are not hearing these words coming from a person with decades long experience as a musical success, you should hear them. You should listen to them. You should start the vibe. Everybody comes to have a great night, right? You got to start in the daytime, right? You got to start that great vibe. You got to have that great vibe with all the people around you, all your fellow creators, the engineer, the road crew, your tech, if you're lucky enough to have a tech or your cousin Larry, right, who brought your guitar, right? And everybody around the good time starts long before the lights turn on. Exactly.
Juan Escovedo 44:40
Yeah. And then there's some people that I see from a distance or love the way they play. And I had hired them and when they came to rehearsals or to show them like, and that attitude and this, I just, you don't want to fire him, but do you use them and don't use them again? Yeah. So it Is that important? Not just because you could place your attitude, because I don't want to be around anybody coming on my stage or even playing with somebody that don't have a great attitude not having a good time. It's like, I don't want to become work. Yeah, you know, it's too much fun. So you've told me about x that you just don't play? I don't play because I don't like the vibe. Yeah. And I, you know, and sometimes a month, the money is really good, but why? Why go for just the money and we all have bills, of course, you know, but yeah, sometimes you just, it's not worth it. You know, it brings you down to like, rehearsals not fun. The guys are not fun. It's, I don't want to do this show. Yeah, I mean, I'll do the show. But then after that, you know, I'm not gonna pick up the phone again. You know, I'll just say I'm busy or whatever, you know, you kind of want to be real, but not mean. Yeah. So you just say you know, you're doing all this stuff. And that's why sometimes there is always something to do. Always There's calls coming in all the time, and there's some bands that hardly pay anything. But I can't wait to get there because it's so much fun. Yeah, so you know worse like that to me, for me. Okay.
Jon Leon Guerrero 46:12
So what about the show if we let them first of all, have we left anybody out on the roster?
Juan Escovedo 46:18
Well, there's the bob Crawford. Okay, great piano player plays my father. On this one. I use different bass players but on this one is Aaron. is playing bass on this one at Yo, she's, and let me see. I think I got everybody okay. Yeah, so bad. So, yeah, it's gonna be great. Oh, oh, my. I forget about my son. My son, Juan Jr. is going to come up and do a little rap. he's a he's j AI the profit on that stage tonight. Yeah, he also has videos out in as a couple of CDs out. He's amazing artists. I don't know how I got so tall because me and my first wife, we're not neither one of these two or six one. Yeah. I'm five 910 Fn. My first wife like five, five. Yeah, but he's six one. tall. dreadlocks, you know? Yeah, all tatted up, but uh,
Jon Leon Guerrero 47:20
there's a rapper. They put something in the water nowadays. I guess he's old generation that just got taller. Yeah, but he's amazing. So he's gonna come out and do a few tunes. Yeah, that's cool. It's nice man when you have because you're extending to the new generation. And, you know, it just shows it's a testament to that fun that you guys had growing up.
Juan Escovedo 47:42
And of course, there'll be a few hundred Escovedo there. So that's how I sell out I just call my family put out a family APB. That's all at me. I said family comes support. See, celebrate your cousin right after you and happy Half of them show up. They do love Yoshi. They do and then you'll see a few get on stage. So, last year Oh, last year Renee came out. We're in a play room. Yeah, he's what come functional man. He's on tour. Yeah. Huh. So I couldn't use him. That's how he killed him last year.
Jon Leon Guerrero 48:17
Yeah, he's great. Yeah. So he's with compunction now.
Juan Escovedo 48:21
Yes. He's on tour. That's terrific.
Jon Leon Guerrero 48:23
Yes, actually, I do believe last year. Eric Young came through. I saw him Yeah, EQ Yeah. Uh huh. I saw him there. He just came through. He was in the crowd. We were having a good time dancing. Uh huh. You know, Megan Mary mint sama. So he came out in support. Right. He's also he's been in conjunction for a while now. I think he's on 30 years or 4030. Man.
Juan Escovedo 48:47
Yeah. He's been barefoot and that actually play with him at the shoreline. He had his own group EQ. Yeah. He has CD out. I think he's working on number two. Hopefully I'll get on that one, too. Well, okay, I was on the first album with him. And that's what's amazing too about Yoshi isn't in the Bay Area in Oakland. So many musicians will come out and support you. Yeah. Because I'm always there. You know, I'm always watching the bands and stuff and musicians, like I said, I just saw the Tonys and but you know, like larry pratt, T by T So, great artists, and he was there last year, too. There. Yeah.
Jon Leon Guerrero 49:27
Yeah. But you look around, Larry. Let's take a moment to just love them. Yes. For a minute. Yeah, man. That dude is a musical connector. He is he's all the way back to Bill summers and summers he right. But just his, you know, the the musical Bay Area scene with its hub in Oakland. It's like, feels like Larry is the centerpiece. He knows everybody. He knows everybody. Well, he's the musical director at the Grammys. Yep. So he's a Heyman. He was the musical director at the tech awards, right? You know, the other a month ago or so. Right? And just does a spectacular job, man. And you want to talk about everybody having a good time, so he'll probably show up.
Juan Escovedo 50:12
Yeah. And john Santos was in the front last time I played. Oh, yeah. JOHN Santos, another amazing percussion player. I'm
Jon Leon Guerrero 50:19
gonna throw out a shout out for him too, because he's throwing a thing at freight and salvage. He is doing like a class, if you want to just come out and get to learn some, some. I think it's just Latin percussion in general. Right?
Juan Escovedo 50:32
So right. Yeah, I caught him for this one too. And for my birthday, he couldn't make it. He looked on a date. He's also very busy. Very busy. Yeah. So yeah. So I'm fortunate to have these artists because, you know, it's like I said, it's, you know, it's just, it's two nights, you know, April 1, and April 2 wasn't Thursday. So I was hoping, you know, some of these guys would not be busy, but they still still be learning. We're
Jon Leon Guerrero 50:57
still playing somewhere. So that's Also everybody, as one mentioned, it's like $22 22. So come out, because that's a that's barely a movie. It's a movie. Maybe a little bit. It's like a small part. But you know
Juan Escovedo 51:12
what? Cause is the hot dogs? Yeah, no, I go to movies a lot. Them $7 high. No man $1 popcorn. And I'm like, can you fill this up? At least you know the popcorn? Yeah. You're spending more on the food than then hook
Jon Leon Guerrero 51:28
it up. I know this popcorn is don't give me the one that's sitting in there. Like you. Fill me up one fresh, fresh. This thing is $8 That's it. It's popcorn. popcorn. Give me the freshmen.
Juan Escovedo 51:40
Well, you know my mother does. Yeah, I must say it. She She makes it at home. She bags it up. She
Jon Leon Guerrero 51:46
She will bring some popcorn.
Juan Escovedo 51:47
And she Oh, it's it's in it. She lives in LA. She's in LA my parents. It could be like 90 degrees and she has a long trench coat. On. I said Mom, thank you Notice is too hot for that Jake. I don't care and you look pregnant.
Jon Leon Guerrero 52:05
So why do you look pregnant moms cuz I got a bucket of chicken
Juan Escovedo 52:11
How are you pregnant at 83 years old
Jon Leon Guerrero 52:13
I saw I saw read the damn show too. I was outside with Charles Quinn you know Charles Quinn?
Juan Escovedo 52:21
I don't think so.
Jon Leon Guerrero 52:21
He's He's a bass player from Ll O. Who's amazing playing with O'Brien now
Juan Escovedo 52:27
Wow.
Jon Leon Guerrero 52:27
And yeah, just he was one of those cats who few years older than my generation but all the time we were playing music everybody just wanted to be as good as Charles going wow. So he was like the little league leader for his age and then he you know, like I said now he's in lives in LA but playing with O'Brien and we were at the Nam show just hanging out outside. Now some moms came walking by so you know they have a lawn jacket on with the full of uncle. She was not bringing Yeah, she was not bringing food in. So maybe they had eaten lunch already. You know, but as always dressed to the nines, right? Looking sharp, they want to be there. You know, I mean, I'm wearing just like some pants in a polo shirt, and they're like, boom,
Juan Escovedo 53:13
yeah, I got a suit on and
Jon Leon Guerrero 53:16
go on stage right now. And you know, and it's two o'clock in the afternoon, let's
Juan Escovedo 53:22
say, you know, my father before he goes to bed. He combs his hair.
Jon Leon Guerrero 53:31
That does not surprise me. Yeah, cuz,
Juan Escovedo 53:33
you know, I stay at the house when I go to LA. Yeah. And he's brushing his hair and I'm like, Okay, this one in the morning. Where's he going? Yeah. And he's brushing for a long time brushing past where are you going to bed? Wait, you're going to bed you just brush your hair. He goes yeah, call me before I go to bed. I see. Why.
Jon Leon Guerrero 53:53
So I could dream looking good.
Juan Escovedo 53:56
He's probably less worried when he wakes up because Come out and have no idea why why he does it. But it's funny to me. Yeah, that's how he is he said our tone and he you know he gets his clothes ready and yeah his closet is amazing that all his suits and ties and shoes is all perfect in order and color. Every time some people come over this new never been to the house. My Mother, she goes, okay there's two things you're going to see. When you come to house pop. My mother is going to show you all his paintings. And his closet. You have
Jon Leon Guerrero 54:33
she goes you have to see his closet. Marvelous because he's got all those stage clothes too. So just that the clothes are in order but they're all short,
Juan Escovedo 54:41
sharp. And impulse always go mob stop showing them my closet. And she just laughs they got to see your closet. It looks like you know when you go shopping when you go to a famous It
Jon Leon Guerrero 54:53
looks like a beautiful clothing store. It doesn t so in order our Rodeo Drive. Yeah.
Juan Escovedo 54:59
And you see them With the disk came from the laundromat with the plastic on it and I'm like my clothes is not getting clean, too. I'm going somewhere. You know his is already cleaned ready to go.
Jon Leon Guerrero 55:10
He's He's always ready. He's ready.
Juan Escovedo 55:13
Hair combed
Jon Leon Guerrero 55:15
it one in the morning one anymore.
Juan Escovedo 55:17
Yeah.
That's it
Jon Leon Guerrero 55:18
you know what's funny, man, we've been doing this for almost an hour. We haven't really talked about anything we've been talking about, you know, we've been talking about I don't have an agenda.
Juan Escovedo 55:29
I asked. I'm actually going to do a session. Are you? Yeah, waiting to finish. Oh, okay, man, holding you back, but you always got things to do. I got things to do. But I'm gonna ask you this. So if your shows are on Wednesday and Thursday night, right. And I want to come out and bring my lady and we want to have a good time. What is your suggestion? What do you what do you think I should do? Should I come out on Wednesday? And maybe, maybe feel it out to see if I want to come back Thursday or should I save it up? Now maybe send my friends on Wednesday, get to get the feedback and then come on Thursday. See? That's a great question. And I get that a lot when we're back to back. My answers always been the same, which is, we're so excited the first night. Yeah. Because you don't know how it's gonna turn out. Could we rehearse parts in here in there and you're on the phone, you're doing all the work. So when it comes, the first night, you're excited, and then you're going to fill it and then for us, it comes together. Now we know what we kind of know what to do or fix or, and sometimes it doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be fun, entertaining, that's going to happen in the assignment. So the next day we kind of like a little more relaxed because we just did it the day before, right? So you felt at work, right? Maybe there's some things you go, you know, what am I gonna do? I'm gonna do this a little different, right? So I suggest you go both nights because They're both vibes gonna be a little different. And I give the freedom to the band members to, okay, this section, do whatever you want. Yeah, we and then we come together and and so all the solos and things we do are going to be default different the vibes are
Jon Leon Guerrero 57:15
always different.
Juan Escovedo 57:16
Yeah, so always different. So I try not to repeat the same thing. And
Jon Leon Guerrero 57:21
well, here's the thing about that, that I will say, when you when you see a great artist, whether it's, let's say a great comedian. I have a friend who's a great comedian, his name is Jay Mohr. And you could see him he'll do an eight o'clock show and a 10 o'clock show, right? And a lot of times, I'll say, Jay, put me on the guest list for the eight o'clock show because I know once I get there at eight, he's gonna put me on for the 10. So Oh, sorry, I got to just put me off for the eight and he goes all right. And then eight. I see him and then I go to the green room and we kick it for a minute and he goes, You stand for the 10 right. Oh, I go well, I wasn't planning on it. But I guess you know, so. But what ends up happening is crowd energies a little different. Yeah, you know it and it only has to be a little different in the first three or four minutes. And then the whole thing just takes a different direction. Right? And so you're witnessing, it's almost like and what I like to do is I like to bring friends to see the whole thing because I know what's going to happen but they don't. So they they go and they go Are we stand for the second show? And I go, yeah, let's stick around. So then will there be there for the second show? And and those are gonna happen for your second show, too, right? Is it somebody is going to take a solo and they're gonna be like, oh, tonight is my night. Right? And then everybody's gonna get out of the way and go, here we go. Hmm. Look at billing. It's took his shoes off, right? They call him shoes for a reason.
Juan Escovedo 58:44
So then, I'm glad I don't call them socks. He's a funky drummer too. So maybe we should call them socks, man. Maybe, maybe.
Jon Leon Guerrero 58:58
Maybe if you're lucky. listeners, you will go see the first show and be amazed and then stick around for the next night and realize that you ain't seen nothing yet. Right? So sometimes
Juan Escovedo 59:11
we're on stage. And we went to this section the night before, but I might go, you know, now you take a soul or you let's extend it or, you know, it's, it's always fun to, like, What am I to say about if you do it twice? It's not an it's not a mistake, like, if you do something was so we have that freedom, why give them the freedom to go we can if the group rate my go to dinky to change the groove a little bit just clowning. And I'm like, let's just follow that.
Jon Leon Guerrero 59:43
Yep. So we don't know, always where it's going and even how it's going to end up. So and here's what our listeners should know about that. Hmm. You will know this. When you go to the show. You will know this. Because you might think, Oh, yeah, they rehearsed that. And of course, they rehearsed it. But you will physically point at somebody. And they'll know. I almost feel like it's a it's like a bylaw is like a Escovedo bylaw, right. If you get pointed at, you gotta go, it's time to go.
Juan Escovedo 1:00:13
It's time to go. No, we didn't rehearse it. And I feel it right
Jon Leon Guerrero 1:00:16
now. And you'd be like, I don't feel like it. Well, you can't you can't disobey the bylaw.
Juan Escovedo 1:00:22
Or anybody that will say no, right?
Jon Leon Guerrero 1:00:24
And they have the vocabulary to go to a different place. And that was my point. That's why I'm bringing this up. Because everybody on that stage has a vocabulary that from one night to the next, they'll have a different thing to say. Exactly. So coming those nights. Yeah, let's see if you got the stamina. This nurse let's see if you got it in you to come for two nights because I bet you this time next year you'll be saying man do remember that was the highlight of the year is at least the highlight of the first quarter because you'd be like, I didn't realize I had it in me, right? That's when I reignited my marriage. That's when I found myself and came back. And I realized that I was younger than I felt. That's when I realized that it wasn't so bad being 62 because I still feel like I did when I was 22. Mm hmm. That's what people are gonna feel right. And then I'm setting the bar high one because I know you're going to deliver
Juan Escovedo 1:01:19
Yeah, of course. Because it's not just me. I have great musicians. But even like last year, when I play there in this Soto, people were like, you don't want it again. Like how are you going to top last year? And why cuz it's this year because there's a new year and I got a little different musicians and different songs than last year, so it's still going to be on 10 it's gonna be a great a great night.
Jon Leon Guerrero 1:01:48
Okay, so expect some funk. definitely expect some salsa. Expect a great time. Expect to experience some love in the room. So bring whoever it is you're romantic with, bring them because it can be some love in the air. There's gonna be a good time. And when you go to a one Escovedo show you are going to realize he did not end the party. He started the party, and you're gonna take the party home with you. That's it. So our guest today, the great always on Escobedo. Thank you man.
Juan Escovedo 1:02:23
Thanks for having me.
Jon Leon Guerrero 1:02:24
That was good.
You can get tickets for just 22 bucks at Yoshi calm, and we'll put a link in the show notes on our website too.
